Abstract
Meningioma is one of the most common benign tumor developing in the brain or spinal cord. Even total removal does not prevent the recurrence and metastasis. Routine pathological examination is not enough to predict the recurrence and metastasis. Recent development of immunohistochemical study to estimate the proliferative potential is proved to be effective to predict them.
Authors retrospectively studied AgNOR, MIB-1, and PCNA in 96 meningioma cases operated at the Kyungpook University Hospital during the recent 7.5 years.
The result was as follows: The proliferative potential was significantly lower according to the age. However, tumor size, symptom duration, radiological and pathological findings, preoperative symptoms such as seizures and motor weakness, consciousness, edema, and treatment result were not significantly related with proliferative potential in mostly benign meningiomas.
In conclusion, in mostly benign meningioma cases, preoperative clinical, radiological and pathological findings were not significantly correlated with proliferative potential. However, as the patient become older, the proliferative potential was smaller significantly. ~rttis result suggest the younger the patient, th.e tumor grows faster than the older.
